Families making less than $200,000 annually will not have to pay tuition at MIT.

CAMBRIDGE—Students from households earning less than $200,000 annually will not be assessed tuition at MIT beginning in the autumn of 2025.

In addition to having an allowance for books and other personal needs, families earning less than $100,000 will not be required to pay for housing, meals, or other fees.

Families making less than $140,000 are currently exempt from paying tuition at the Cambridge, Massachusetts university, and those making less than $75,000 are also exempt from fees.

"Cost of college is a real concern"

"The cost of college is a real concern for families across the board, and we're determined to make this transformative educational experience available to the most talented students, whatever their financial circumstances," Sally Kornbluth, the president of MIT, said in a statement

According to MIT, need-based financial aid is still available to families earning more over $200,000.

The cost of tuition at MIT for the 2024–2025 school year is close to $62,000. An additional $24,000 may be spent on housing, meals, and other expenses per year.

MIT has stated that it intends to concentrate on ensuring that all students can afford its education. According to the institution, a 2023 Supreme Court decision to eliminate affirmative action has resulted in a less diverse entering class this year.

College financial aid in Massachusetts

Families earning between $85,000 and $150,000 are asked to pay 0–10% of their income toward their children's education at the neighboring Harvard University, while those earning over $150,000 are asked to pay proportionately more "based on their individual circumstances."

Waltham's Brandeis University announced Tuesday that it will begin waiving tuition for students whose families earn less than $75,000 annually in the fall. Grants and scholarships will pay half of tuition, or more than $67,000 annually, for families making less than $200,000.

Massachusetts citizens earning less than $75,000 annually would not be required to pay tuition or mandatory fees, according to a statement released by UMass Boston last month.
